I BECOME AN APPRENTICE, AND BANJO GETS TO BE A KNIGHT

Idemonstrated my abilities for Merlin, starting with the fire-making that had kept us fed during our journey. I hummed a few bars of "Ring of Fire" and focused on creating a small flame above my palm. The fire danced there, warm and steady, casting flickering shadows on the stone walls.

"Impressive control," Merlin said, stroking his beard. "Most beginners would have singed their eyebrows off by now."

Next came the ice. I switched to humming "Blue Christmas" and concentrated on forming a perfect cube in my other hand. The ice materialized with a satisfying crystalline sound, cold enough to make my fingers tingle.

"Fascinating," Merlin murmured. "The way you channel through melody is quite unique. Most of us just use chants since they're the easiest to control."

For the force demonstration, I hummed "I'm Movin' On" by Rascal Flatts and gently lifted one of his books from across the room, floating it over to land softly on his desk. The book settled with barely a whisper.

"And the explosions?" Merlin asked, his eyes bright with curiosity.

I grinned and hummed a quick snippet of "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" by Toby Keith—seemed fitting—and created a series of tiny pops in the air above us, no bigger than a firecracker. The sound echoed briefly in the circular chamber.

Merlin nodded approvingly. "Excellent. The princess was right. You are talented when it comes to music."

"Thank you," I replied with a nod. Then, thinking of my partner down in the dungeon, I cleared my throat. "Not that I mind showing you this stuff, but what about Banjo?"

Merlin bobbed his head. "Right you are. We should take care of our chimpanzee visitor."

Turning, he hurried, as much as an old man could hurry, toward the doorway that led to the stairs. He moved slowly down the stairs, his robes rustling against the stone steps. When we reached the bottom, he chanted something in what sounded like Latin mixed with something older, something that made the air itself seem to listen. The heavy door's lock clicked open with a sound like breaking chains.

"That's a nice trick," I said, impressed despite myself.

Merlin chuckled, the sound echoing in the narrow stairwell. "You'll find that most of being a wizard is being able to do nice tricks in front of the right people."

I couldn't help but grin at that. "And the other part?"

Merlin's smile took on a distinctly mischievous quality. "The other part of being a wizard is making very large, very loud explosions."

"Well," I said, thinking back to that first uncontrolled blast in the forest. "Big explosions I've done. Though I haven't actually tried any really large explosions since the very beginning when I couldn't control it."

We made our way back through the castle's corridors to the dungeon. The guards looked up as we approached, their expressions shifting from boredom to wariness when they saw Merlin.

"Release the troll," Merlin commanded, his voice carrying the kind of authority that brooked no argument.

The guards exchanged uncertain glances.
